Background
Autonomy is an important capability for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which builds and operates unmanned robotic spacecraft.
Future missions will have progressively advanced onboard autonomy capabilities, to increase science return, improve spacecraft reliability, reduce operations cost, or simply achieve missions that cannot be operated through a regular ground-in-the-loop operations cycle due to communication constraints or limited lifetime. Autonomy has already significantly increased capabilities on NASA missions.
I am working on these tools for operations for autonomy as an intern at the Human-Centered Design (HCD) Group. My role involves designing, developing, and testing software tools to capture this science intent, and to understand the impact autonomy has on operations.
